A comparison of the 6A brackets, OSAA vs. JeffD's.

If you have a constructive comment about what I've done this year, I'm more than open to suggestions. Leave them here or you can email me at cghs24 at yahoo.com and I guarantee a response...well, eventually. I do occasionally check that mailbox.

6A

My bracket:
Jesuit (2) bye
Barlow @ Sprague
Clackamas @ Tigard (9)
Wilson @ Grants Pass (6)
South Salem (4) bye
Canby (7) @ West Linn
Westview @ Grant
McKay @ Central Catholic (10)
South Medford (3) bye
Southridge (5) @ David Douglas
Newberg @ McNary (14)
Centennial @ Lincoln (13)
Lake Oswego (1) bye
Oregon City @ Sheldon (11)
West Salem @ Beaverton (11)
Gresham @ Tualatin (8)

OSAA Bracket:

Jesuit (2) bye
Gresham @ Grants Pass (6)
Wilson @ Canby (7)
Clackamas @ South Salem (4)
Lake Oswego (1) bye
McKay @ Grant
Sheldon (11) @ Tigard (9)
Westview @ Central Catholic (10)
South Medford (3) bye
Newberg @ David Douglas
Oregon City @ Southridge (5)
Centennial @ Lincoln (13)
Tualatin (8) bye
Roseburg @ McNary (14)
Barlow @ West Linn
Sprague @ Beaverton (11)

Results of the final oregonlive.com poll in parentheses.

The first thing I notice is that the OSAA bracket is VERY top-heavy. The #1,2,4,6,7,9,10 and the two teams tied for #11 are ALL on top. Not only that, but #2,4,6,and 7 are in the same QUARTER. Two of those teams won't even make it to the quarterfinals. The second-lowest ranked league #1 team has a bye, and the two highest-ranked teams in the bottom half will meet in the quarterfinals. Seems very unbalanced to me.

In my bracket, #2,4,6,7,9 and 10 are still on top, but #1 is no longer there. I'm a little unhappy about #4 playing #7 in the second round, but such is the way of the Pacific league. So, if the pollsters know their stuff, #2 will play #6 and #4 will play #10 in the quarterfinals. In the bottom half are #1,3,5,8,both 11s,12 and 14. The only part of my bracket I'm unhappy with is the second-round matchup between the #3 and #5 teams. My quarters would #3/5 vs #13, and #1 vs #8. Again, the bottom half of this bracket is a little imbalanced, but not horribly.

Final Spreadsheet

Is here.

1A Proposed Playoff

Proposed 1A Playoff

I’ll start by placing the 6 league leaders in the first 6 spots in the bracket. They will go in point order into pools ABCDDC.

Pool A: Dufur
Pool B: Lowell
Pool C: Crane, Imbler
Pool D: Butte Falls, Perrydale

Now to put in the 6 league 2nd-place teams opposite the league champions. Since Pools A and D will be on the top half-bracket, and pools B and C on the bottom half-bracket, I’ll separate based on that. Each team will be placed in the first spot they can possibly be placed in pools BAABCD.

Pool A: Dufur, Joseph, Jordan Valley
Pool B: Lowell, St. Paul, Echo
Pool C: Crane, Imbler, Triad
Pool D: BF, Perrydale, Siletz Valley

Now the wild card teams go into the bracket. They should not be put in a pool with any other team from the same league, if at all possible. Let’s see where they could go: Gilchrist, A or B. Cove, B or D. Triangle Lake, A or C. Adrian, B or D. So that results in this:

Pool A: Dufur, Joseph, JV, Gilchrist
Pool B: Lowell, St. Paul, Echo, Adrian
Pool C: Crane, Imbler, Triad, Triangle Lake
Pool D: BF, Perrydale, Siletz, Cove

The bracket would be:
Gilchrist @ Dufur
Jordan Valley @ Joseph
Siletz Valley @ Perrydale
Cove @ Butte Falls
Triangle Lake @ Crane
Triad @ Imbler
Echo @ St. Paul
Adrian @ Lowell

Just for jollies, here’s a bracket with the top 16 points teams without any regard for league matchups.

Adrian @ Dufur
Jordan Valley @ St. Paul
Gilchrist @ Perrydale
Triad @ Butte Falls
Cove @ Crane
Echo @ Joseph
Siletz Valley @ Imbler
Triangle Lake @ Lowell

Pool A: Amity, Umatilla, Vernonia

Now the third place teams go into the bracket, into pools CDD if possible. They should not be put in a pool with any other team from the same league. Once Elgin is placed, we know where Weston-McEwen will go, and hopefully we can fill in the other two wild-card teams.

Pool A: Astoria
Pool B: North Valley, North Bend
Pool C: Marist, Baker

Proposed 5A Playoff

Proposed 5A Playoff

Before I get rolling on this, if you have ANY reasonable suggestions at all, feel free to leave a comment either on the blog or on oregonlive.com forums.

How the points were determined is outlined here: http://ohsfb.blogspot.com/2008/09/how-my-ratings-work.html

I start by placing the 6 league #1 seeds in the first 6 spots in the bracket. They will go in pools ABCDDC in point order.

Pool A: Thurston
Pool B: West Albany
Pool C: Sherwood, Madison
Pool D: Mountain View, Crater

Now I’ll put in the 6 league #2 seeds opposite the league champions. Since Pools A and D will be on the top half-bracket, and pools B and C on the bottom half-bracket, I’ll separate based on that. Each team will be placed in the first spot they can possibly be placed in pools BAABCD.

Pool A: Thurston, Century, Corvallis
Pool B: WA, Marshfield, Hermiston
Pool C: Sherwood, Madison, Klamath Union
Pool D: MV, Crater, Jefferson

Now the 4 third place teams go into the bracket. They should not be put in a pool with any other team from the same league. They will go in the first spot they can be possibly placed in pools DCBA. Churchill and South Albany had to be switched so the wild cards could be placed correctly.

Pool A: Thurston, Century, Corvallis, Bend
Pool B: WA, Marshfield, Hermiston, Hillsboro
Pool C: Sherwood, Madison, KU, Churchill
Pool D: MV, Crater, Jefferson, South Albany

Now the wild card teams get put in last. Checking the conferences, we find there are two Midwestern, one NWOC and one Southern Sky. Ideally, we’ll put the top-rated one from each league in a pool away from the other teams from the same league. We’ll start by placing those, then putting Willamette in the last available spot.

Pool A: 1. Thurston; 2. Century; 3. Corvallis; 4. Bend; 5. Ashland.
Pool B: 1. W. Albany; 2. Marshfield; 3. Hermiston; 4. Hillsboro; 5. Willamette.
Pool C: 1. Sherwood; 2. Madison; 3. Klamath Union; 4. South Albany; 5. Springfield.
Pool D: 1. Mountain View; 2. Crater; 3. Jefferson; 4. Churchill; 5. Glencoe.

That would result in this bracket for the playoffs:

Ashland @ Bend, winner @ Thurston
Corvallis @ Century
Jefferson @ Crater
Glencoe @ Churchill, winner @ Mountain View
Springfield @ S. Albany, winner @ Sherwood
Klamath Union @ Madison
Hermiston @ Marshfield
Willamette @ Hillsboro, winner @ W. Albany

No coins were harmed in the construction of this bracket.

Just for jollies, here’s a bracket with the top 20 points teams without any regard for league matchups.

How the points were determined is outlined here: http://ohsfb.blogspot.com/2008/09/how-my-ratings-work.html

I start by placing the 7 league #1 seeds in the first 7 spots in the bracket. They will go in pools ABCDDCB in point order.

Pool A: Jesuit
Pool B: Lake Oswego, Tualatin
Pool C: South Medford, Lincoln
Pool D: South Salem, Central Catholic

Now I’ll put in the 7 league #2 seeds opposite the league champions. Since Pools A and D will be on the top half-bracket, and pools B and C on the bottom half-bracket, I’ll separate based on that. Each team will be placed in the first spot they can possibly be placed in pools AABCDDC

Pool A: Jesuit, Grants Pass, Tigard
Pool B: LO, Tualatin, Beaverton
Pool C: SM, Lincoln, McNary, David Douglas
Pool D: SS, CC, Grant, West Linn

Now the 6 third place teams go into the bracket. They should not be put in a pool with any other team from the same league. They will go in the first spot they can be possibly placed in pools BAABCD. It is possible that we may have to move some teams around a little bit depending on what happens with the wild cards.

Pool A: Jesuit, GP, Tigard, Sprague, Barlow
Pool B: LO, Tualatin, Beaverton, Sheldon, Oregon City
Pool C: SM, Lincoln, McNary, DD, Southridge
Pool D: SS, CC, Grant, WL, Canby

Now the wild card teams get put in last. Checking the conferences, we find there are one Metro, two Mt. Hood, one Pacific, one 3 Rivers and two CVC and one PIL. Ideally, we’ll put the top rated one from each league in a pool away from the other teams from the same league. We’ll start by placing those.

Pool A: Jesuit, GP, Tigard, Sprague, Barlow, Clackamas, Wilson
Pool B: LO, Tualatin, Beaverton, Sheldon, OC, W. Salem, Gresham
Pool C: SM, Lincoln, McNary, DD, Southridge, Newberg
Pool D: SS, CC, Grant, WL, Canby, Westview

So that leaves Centennial and McKay. They’ll have to go into a pool with another team from the same league. Again, ideally, they will not run into that team until the quarterfinals. The way the bracket will work for each pool is 1st-bye; 4th-5th; 3rd-6th; 2nd-7th. So, by putting McKay in pool D and Centennial in pool C, they will not meet another league team until the quarterfinals.

Pool A: 1. Jesuit; 2. Grants Pass; 3. Tigard; 4. Sprague' 5. Barlow; 6. Clackamas; 7. Wilson.

Pool B: 1. Lake Oswego; 2. Tualatin; 3. Beaverton; 4. Sheldon; 5. Oregon City; 6. West Salem; 7. Gresham.

Pool C: 1. South Medford; 2. Lincoln; 3. McNary; 4. David Douglas; 5. Southridge; 6. Newberg; 7. Centennial.

Pool D: 1. South Salem; 2. Central Catholic; 3. Grant; 4. West Linn; 5. Canby; 6. Westview; 7. McKay.

That would result in this bracket for the playoffs:

Jesuit bye
Barlow @ Sprague
Clackamas @ Tigard
Wilson @ Grants Pass
South Salem bye
Canby @ West Linn
Westview @ Grant
McKay @ Central Catholic
South Medford bye
Southridge @ David Douglas
Newberg @ McNary
Centennial @ Lincoln
Lake Oswego bye
Oregon City @ Sheldon
West Salem @ Beaverton
Gresham @ Tualatin

Just for jollies, here’s a bracket with the top 28 points teams without any regard for league matchups.

Jesuit bye
Grant @ Sheldon
McKay @ Grants Pass
Clackamas @ Canby
Centennial @ South Salem
W. Linn @ Tualatin
Barlow @ Tigard
Southridge bye
S. Medford bye
Sprague @ McNary
Gresham @ Lincoln
Oregon City @ Central Catholic
Wilson @ Beaverton
Newberg @ Westview
W. Salem @ David Douglas
Lake Oswego bye

Based on current league standings (these are still kinda crazy, I know) and the system of using 2 teams per league and 4 wild-cards for a 16-team playoff, the playoff teams would be, with their league records in parentheses:

D1: Perrydale (5-0), St. Paul (4-1) D2: Butte Falls (6-0), Triad (5-2) D3: Dufur (4-0), Echo (4-1) D4: Imbler (4-0), Joseph (3-1) D5: Lowell (5-0), Siletz Valley (3-2), D6: Crane (7-0) and Jordan Valley (6-0)

The wildcards would be: Gilchrist, S. Wasco County, Triangle Lake and Adrian.

Before I get rolling on this, if you have ANY reasonable suggestions at all, feel free to leave a comment either on the blog or on oregonlive.com forums.

1A Playoff according to current records

I'll start by placing the 6 league leaders in the first 6 spots in the bracket. They will go in point order into pools ABCDDC.

Pool A: Dufur
Pool B: Lowell
Pool C: Butte Falls, Imbler
Pool D: Perrydale, Crane

Now to put in the 6 league 2nd-place teams opposite the league champions. Since Pools A and D will be on the top half-bracket, and pools B and C on the bottom half-bracket, I’ll separate based on that. Each team will be placed in the first spot they can possibly be placed in pools BAABCD

Pool A: Dufur, Joseph, Siletz Valley
Pool B: Lowell, St. Paul, Jordan Valley
Pool C: Butte Falls, Imbler, Echo
Pool D: Perrydale, Crane, Triad

Now the wild card teams go into the bracket. They should not be put in a pool with any other team from the same league, if at all possible. Let’s see where they could go: Gilchrist, A or B. S. Wasco, B or D. Triangle Lake, C or D. Adrian, A or C. Cool, this will work.

Pool A: Dufur, Joseph, SV, Gilchrist
Pool B: Lowell, St. Paul, JV, South Wasco County
Pool C: BF, Imbler, JV, Echo, Adrian
Pool D: Perrydale, Crane, Triad, Triangle Lake

Success!

The bracket would be:
Gilchrist @ Dufur
Siletz Valley @ Joseph (LONG drive)
Triad @ Crane
Triangle Lake @ Perrydale
S. Wasco County @ Lowell
Jordan Valley @ St. Paul
Echo @ Imbler
Adrian @ Butte Falls

Not bad. Let’s see how it changes in the next 2 weeks.

2A, 10/21 Points and Potential Bracket

2A, 10/21/08 Team, Points, Current Place in League

Corbett 35.667 (4th)
Riddle 35.000 (6th)
St. Mary’s 34.286 (5th)

I’m making a slight change here. The two leagues with 5 teams will only get two automatic berths into the playoffs, which will add two wild card teams to the mix. Only seems fair. As based on current league standings (yes, I know, very early in the season) and the system of using 3 teams from three leagues, 2 teams from two leagues and 3 wild-cards for a 16-team playoff, the playoff teams would be, with their league records in parentheses:

Northwest: Knappa (2-0), Portland Christian (2-0) Mountain View: Oakridge (5-0), Central Linn (4-1), Oakland (4-1) Tri-River: Culver (3-0), Santiam (2-1), Scio (2-1) SCL: Lakeview (2-0), Lost River (2-0) Blue Mtn: Heppner (5-0), Pilot Rock (4-1) and Elgin (4-1).

The wild cards would be Bonanza, Nestucca and Weston-McEwen.

2A Playoff according to current records

Before I get rolling on this, if you have ANY reasonable suggestions at all, feel free to leave a comment either on the blog or on oregonlive.com forums.

We start by placing the 5 league leaders in the first 5 spots in the bracket. They will go in point order into pools ABCDD.

Pool A: Culver
Pool B: Portland Christian
Pool C: Heppner
Pool D: Lakeview, Oakridge

Now to put in the 5 league 2nd-place teams opposite the league champions. Since Pools A and D will be on the top half-bracket, and pools B and C on the bottom half-bracket, I’ll separate based on that. Each team will be placed in the first spot they can possibly be placed in pools CBAAB

Pool A: Culver, Pilot Rock, Knappa
Pool B: PC, Santiam, Lost River
Pool C: Heppner, Central Linn
Pool D: Lakeview, Oakridge

Now the third place teams go into the bracket. They should not be put in a pool with any other team from the same league. Once Elgin is placed, we know where Weston-McEwen will go, and hopefully we can fill in the other two wild-card teams.

Pool A: Culver, Pilot Rock, Knappa, Oakland
Pool B: PC, Santiam, Lost River, Weston-McEwen
Pool C: Heppner, CL, Scio, Bonanza
Pool D: Lakeview, Oakridge, Elgin, Nestucca

Oakland was put in pool A so that we had a place to put Weston-McEwen.

Success!

The bracket would be:
Oakland @ Culver
Knappa @ Pilot Rock
Elgin @ Oakridge
Nestucca @ Lakeview
Weston-McEwen @ Portland Christian
Lost River @ Santiam
Scio @ Central Linn
Bonanza @ Heppner

Not bad. Let’s see how it changes in the next 2 weeks.

Chemawa 31.333 (8th)

Based on current league standings (yes, I know, very early in the season) and the system of using 3 teams per league and 1 wild-card for a 16-team playoff, the playoff teams would be, with their league records in parentheses:

L&C: Rainier (3-0), Vernonia (3-0), Clatskanie (1-2) West Valley: Amity (5-0), Willamina (5-0), Dayton or Colton (3-2) PacWest: Regis (5-0), Santiam Christian (5-0), Toledo or Jefferson (3-2) Sunset: Gold Beach (5-0), Cascade Christian (4-1), Myrtle Point (4-1) E. Oregon: Grant Union (3-0), Umatilla (3-0), Vale (1-2)

The wildcard, the best fourth place team, would be whichever of Dayton and Colton was not in third place.

3A Playoff according to current records

We start by placing the 5 league leaders in the first 5 spots in the bracket. They will go in point order into pools ABCDD.

Pool A: Rainier
Pool B: Grant Union
Pool C: Amity
Pool D: Gold Beach, Regis/Santiam Christian

Now to put in the 5 league 2nd-place teams opposite the league champions. Since Pools A and D will be on the top half-bracket, and pools B and C on the bottom half-bracket, I’ll separate based on that. Each team will be placed in the first spot they can possibly be placed in pools CBAAB

Pool A: Rainier, Umatilla, Willamina
Pool B: GU, SC/Regis, Vernonia
Pool C: Amity, Myrtle Point
Pool D: GB, Regis/SC

Now the third place teams go into the bracket. They should not be put in a pool with any other team from the same league. Once Dayton is placed, we'll know where Colton will go. We will check for spots in this order: CDDCB.

Pool A: Rainier, Umatilla, Willamina, Cascade Christian
Pool B: GU, Sc/Regis, Vernonia, Colton
Pool C: Amity, MP, Clatskanie, Toledo
Pool D: GB, Regis/SC, Dayton, Vale

CC was put in pool A so that we had a place to put Colton.

Success!

The bracket would be:
Cascade Christian @ Rainier
Willamina @ Umatilla
Dayton @ Regis/SC
Vale @ Gold Beach
(I could have found a longer travel time for a team….wait, no, probably not.)
Colton @ Grant Union
Vernonia @ SC/Regis
Clatskanie @ Myrtle Point
Toledo @ Amity

Not bad. Let’s see how it changes in the next 2 weeks.

Cowapa: Astoria (3-0), Banks (2-1), Tillamook (2-1) Capital: Estacada (4-0), Gladstone (4-0), Stayton (3-2) Far West: Douglas (3-0), South Umpqua (2-1), North Bend (2-1) Valco: Central (2-0), Philomath (2-0) Sky-Em: Marist (4-0), Junction City (4-1), LaPine (2-2) Skyline: Hidden Valley (3-0), N. Valley (2-0) GOL: Baker (1-0) and McLoughlin (1-0)

The two wildcard teams would be LaSalle and Elmira.

In this week: South Umpqua, McLoughlin
Out this week: Henley, Ontario

4A Playoff according to current records

Before I get rolling on this, if you have ANY reasonable suggestions at all, feel free to leave a comment either on the blog or on oregonlive.com forums.

I'll start by placing the 7 league leaders in the first 7 spots in the bracket. They will go in point order ABCDDCB

Pool A: Astoria
Pool B: Gladstone, Douglas
Pool C: Central, Hidden Valley
Pool D: Marist, Baker

Now to put in the 7 league 2nd-place teams opposite the league champions. Since Pools A and D will be on the top half-bracket, and pools B and C on the bottom half-bracket, I’ll separate based on that. Each team will be placed in the first spot they can possibly be placed in pools AABCDDC

Pool A: Astoria, N. Valley, Estacada
Pool B: Gladstone, Douglas, Banks
Pool C: Central, HV, Junction City, McLoughlin
Pool D: Marist, Baker, Philomath, S. Umpqua

Now the third place teams and the wildcards go into the bracket. They should not be put in a pool with any other team from the same league if at all possible. They will go in pools BAABCD.

Pool A: Astoria, NV, Estacada, North Bend, Elmira
Pool B: Gladstone, Douglas, Banks, LaPine, LaSalle
Pool C: Central, HV, JC, McLoughlin, Tillamook
Pool D: Marist, Baker, Philomath, SU, Stayton

Dang. Unsuccess. Where can these teams go? Tillamook and Stayton HAVE to take the 2 empty spots in C & D as it is set at the moment. It seems a solution is to move McLoughlin over to pool B…let’s give it a try.

Pool A: Astoria, NV, Estacada, LaPine, North Bend
Pool B: Gladstone, Douglas, Banks, McLoughlin, Elmira
Pool C: Central, HV, JC, Tillamook, Stayton
Pool D: Marist, Baker, Philomath, SU, LaSalle

Success!

The bracket would be:
North Bend @ LaPine, winner @ Astoria
Estacada @ North Valley
Philomath @ Baker
LaSalle @ South Umpqua, winner @ Marist
Elmira @ McLoughlin, winner @ Gladstone
Banks @ Douglas
Junction City @ Hidden Valley
Stayton @ Tillamook, winner @ Central

Changing things up a bit here. Only taking 2 teams from the two 5-team conferences and 3 teams from the other 4. This will add two wild cards to the mix. Based on current league standings and the system of using 3 teams for 4 leagues, 2 teams for 2 leagues and 4 wild-cards for a 20-team playoff, the playoff teams would be, with their league records in parentheses:

PIL: Jefferson (3-0), Madison (2-0), NW Oregon: Sherwood (4-0), Century (4-1), Hillsboro (3-1) Mid-Willamette: South Albany (5-0), West Albany (5-0), Corvallis (4-1) Midwestern: Thurston (3-0), Springfield (2-1), Churchill (2-1), Southern Sky: Ashland (2-0), Klamath Union (2-0) IMC: Mountain View (4-1), Hermiston (3-1), Summit (3-1).

The four wildcards would be Willamette, Marshfield, Crater and Pendleton. Glencoe is not considered because they are not in 4th place in their league. Willamette is, because the 4th place team in that league is a wildcard as well.

The byes would go to all the first place teams AND second place teams. I have been a doofus about this. It’s a 20-team bracket, 12 of them get first round byes. In my system, the third-place and wild-card teams should be playing each other, with the third place teams being at home.

In this week: Marshfield.
Out this week: Cleveland.

5A Playoff according to current records

Before I get rolling on this, if you have ANY reasonable suggestions at all, feel free to leave a comment either on the blog or on oregonlive.com forums.

I start by placing the 6 league leaders in the first 6 spots in the bracket. They will go in point order ABCDDC

Pool A: Thurston
Pool B: West Albany
Pool C: Sherwood, Jefferson
Pool D: Mountain View, Ashland

Now I put in the 6 league 2nd-place teams opposite the league champions. Since Pools A and D will be on the top half-bracket, and pools B and C on the bottom half-bracket, I’ll separate based on that. Each team will be placed in the first spot they can possibly be placed in starting BAABCD

Pool A: Thurston, Century, S. Albany
Pool B: WA, Springfield, Klamath Union
Pool C: Sherwood, Jefferson, Hermiston
Pool D: MV, Ashland, Madison

Now the four third place teams go into the bracket. They should not be put in a pool with any other team from the same league. They will go in the first available spot in pools DCBA.

Pool A: Thurston, Century, SA, Summit
Pool B: WA, Springfield, Klamath, Hillsboro
Pool C: Sherwood, Jefferson, Hermiston, Corvallis
Pool D: MV, Ashland, Madison, Churchill

That leaves the wild card teams. I want to place them in pools away from other teams in their league if at all possible.

Pool A: Thurston, Century, SA, Summit, Crater
Pool B: WA, Springfield, Klamath, Hillsboro, Pendleton
Pool C: Sherwood, Jeff, Hermiston, Corvallis, Marshfield
Pool D: MV, Ashland, Madison, Churchill, Willamette

Wasn't possible.

Still a work in progress. Something I will consider for next week is only considering 3rd-4th place teams in league for wildcard spots.

The bracket would be:

Crater @ Summit, winner @ Thurston
S. Albany @ Century
Madison @ Ashland
Willamette @ Churchill, winner @ Mountain View
Pendleton @ Hillsboro, winner @ West Albany
Klamath Union @ Springfield
Hermiston @ Jefferson
Marshfield @ Corvallis, winner @ Sherwood.

* = does not include 2 non-league games that were changed to forfeit losses.

I’m changing things up a little bit here. Since the PIL is a 5-team league, only their first 2 teams will be considered for playoffs. This will add another wild card team. Based on current league standings (which are starting to make some semblance of sense) and the system of using 3 teams per league (except the PIL) and 8 wild-cards for a 28-team playoff, the automatic league playoff teams would be, with their league records in parentheses:

PIL: Grant (3-0), Lincoln (2-0) Metro: Jesuit (3-0), Beaverton (2-1), Southridge (2-1) Mt. Hood: Central Catholic (5-0), Barlow (4-1), David Douglas (4-1) Three Rivers: Lake Oswego (5-0), West Linn (3-1), Oregon City (3-1) Pacific: Canby (3-0), Tigard (3-0), Tualatin (2-1) Southwest: South Medford (3-0), Grants Pass (2-1), Sheldon (2-1) Central Valley: South Salem (5-0), Sprague (3-2), West Salem/McNary/McKay (2-2).

The byes would still go to Lake O, S. Medford, Jesuit and S. Salem.

The wildcards would be Westview, Newberg, 2 of West Salem/McNary/McKay, Gresham, Redmond, North Medford and Clackamas.

In this week: McKay, Redmond
Out this week: Franklin, McMinnville

6A Playoff according to current records

Before I get rolling on this, if you have ANY reasonable suggestions at all, feel free to leave a comment either on the blog or on oregonlive.com forums.

We start by placing the 7 league leaders in the first 7 spots in the bracket. They will go in point order ABCDDCB.

Pool A: Jesuit
Pool B: South Salem, Lincoln
Pool C: South Medford, Central Catholic
Pool D: Lake Oswego, Canby

Now we put in the 7 league 2nd-place teams opposite the league champions. Since Pools A and D will be on the top half-bracket, and pools B and C on the bottom half-bracket, I’ll separate based on that. Each team will be placed in the first spot they can possibly be placed in starting AABCDDC

Pool A: Jesuit, Grants Pass, Sprague
Pool B: South Salem, Lincoln, Beaverton
Pool C: South Medford, Central Catholic, Tigard, West Linn
Pool D: Lake Oswego, Canby, Barlow, Grant

Now the 6 third place teams go into the bracket. They should not be put in a pool with any other team from the same league. They will go in BAABCD

Pool A: Jesuit, Grants Pass, Sprague, Tualatin, David Douglas
Pool B: South Salem, Lincoln, Beaverton, Sheldon, Oregon City
Pool C: SM, CC, Tigard, West Linn, Southridge
Pool D: LO, Canby, Barlow, Grant, McNary

Now the wild card teams get put in last. Checking the conferences, we find there are one Metro, one SWC, one Mt. Hood, one Pacific one 3 Rivers and three CVC. The five conferences with one team each will have that team placed in the pool that does not have a team from that league, as will the first CVC team. The other two CVC teams will be placed in the empty spots.

Pool A: Jesuit, GP, Sprague, Tualatin, DD, Clackamas, McKay
Pool B: SS, Lincoln, Beaverton, Sheldon, OC, Gresham, Newberg
Pool C: SM, CC, Tigard, West Linn, Southridge, W. Salem, Redmond
Pool D: LO, Canby, Barlow, Grant, McNary, Westview, N. Medford

The bottom two CVC teams were put in the empty slots.

The bracket would be:

Jesuit bye
David Douglas @ Tualatin
Clackamas @ Sprague
McKay @ Grants Pass
Lake Oswego bye
McNary @ Grant
Westview @ Barlow
N. Medford @ Canby
South Salem bye
Oregon City @ Sheldon
Gresham @ Beaverton
Newberg @ Lincoln
South Medford bye
Southridge @ West Linn
West Salem @ Tigard
Redmond @ Central Catholic

Well, it’s not great. Potential for league members to play in second round. Sigh. Back to the drawing board.

By the way, I don’t think those CVC teams can stay where they are.

Latest spreadsheet

Is here:

Spreadsheet

2A, 10/14

I made an attempt at a top 14 here, based on 3 criteria and the teams receiving votes in the coaches poll. 1 & 2 are the Colley and RPI ratings from www.oregonprepsports.net, which is nice enough to link to this blog. 3 is my own point system explained in other parts of this place, which strongly takes into account strength of schedule. 4 is my bestest guess at the coaches poll, based on last week's poll and the latest results.

Team - Colley rank - RPI - My rating - Poll - Total
1. Lakeview 1-1-6-1 9
2. Culver 2-2-2-2 8
3. Heppner 3-5-4-4 16
4. Bonanza 7-4-1-8 20
5. Portland Christian 4-6-4-7 21
6. Pilot Rock 10-8-2-6 26
7. Santiam 5-7-8-10 30
8. Oakridge 6-12-9-5 32
8. Nestucca 9-3-11-9 32
10. Knappa 13-14-10-3 40
11. Central Linn 12-10-7-11 40
12. Lost River 8-9-13-11 41
13. Elgin 11-11-12-14 48
14. Scio 14-13-14-11 52

Cripes, this class is confusing. Put Lakeview ahead of Culver because they won the game...and the undefeated team is...10th?

My system still is in love with Bonanza...not sure what I can do about it...although their next 2 games are against the lowest rank teams, and it will drop them down quite a bit.

Here's what I have this week...

2A, 10/14/08 Team, Record, Points, Current Place in League

Bonanza (4-1) 44.600 (3rd)
Culver (5-1) 43.333 (t-1st)
Pilot Rock (5-1) 43.333 (t-2nd)
Heppner (5-2) 43.286 (1st)
Portland Christian (6-1) 43.286 (1st)
Lakeview (4-2) 43.000 (t-1st)
Central Linn (5-2) 42.571 (2nd)
Santiam (5-1) 42.500 (t-1st)
Oakridge (6-1) 42.143 (1st)
Knappa (6-0) 41.667 (2nd)
Kennedy (3-4) 40.714 (t-3rd)
North Douglas (4-1) 40.600 (t-3rd)
Nestucca (5-2) 40.571 (3rd)
Elgin (4-2) 40.500 (t-2nd)
Lost River (3-3) 40.167 (t-1st)
Weston-McEwen (4-2) 40.167 (t-4th)
Scio (4-3) 40.143 (t-3rd)
Stanfield (3-3) 39.667 (6th)
Blanchet (3-4) 39.000 (t-5th)
Enterprise (3-3) 39.000 (t-4th)
Oakland (3-2) 38.600 (t-3rd)
Union (1-5) 37.333 (t-7th)
Chiloquin (3-4) 36.714 (4th)
Salem Academy (2-4) 36.500 (t-5th)
Glendale (1-5) 36.167 (8th)
Riddle (1-5) 36.167 (t-5th)
Gaston (2-4) 36.000 (5th)
Irrigon (0-5) 36.000 (t-7th)
Yoncalla (2-4) 35.500 (7th)
Corbett (0-5) 35.200 (4th)
Monroe (1-5) 35.000 (t-5th)
St. Mary’s (1-5) 33.667 (5th)

Based on current league standings (yes, I know, very early in the season) and the system of using 3 teams per league and 1 wild-card for a 16-team playoff, the playoff teams would be, with their league records in parentheses:

Northwest: Knappa (1-0), Nestucca (1-1), Portland Christian (2-0) Mountain View: Oakland or North Douglas (3-1), Oakridge (4-0), Central Linn (3-1) Tri-River: Culver (2-0), Kennedy or Scio (1-1), Santiam (2-0) SCL: Bonanza (1-1), Lakeview (1-0), Lost River (1-0) Blue Mtn: Heppner (4-0), Pilot Rock (3-1) and Elgin (3-1).

The wild card would be (depending on the third place teams): N. Douglas (if Oakland and Kennedy are third), Kennedy (if Scio is third), or Weston-McEwen (if ND and Kennedy are third).

Confused? Me too.

Based on current league standings (starting to iron themselves out) and the system of using 3 teams per league and 1 wild-card for a 16-team playoff, the playoff teams would be, with their league records in parentheses:

L&C: Rainier (2-0), Vernonia (2-0), either Neah-Kah-Nie (1-1) or Warrenton (1-1) West Valley: Amity (4-0), Willamina (4-0), Dayton (3-1) PacWest: Regis (4-0), Santiam Christian (4-0), Toledo (3-1) Sunset: Gold Beach (4-0), Cascade Christian (3-1), Myrtle Point (3-1) E. Oregon: Grant Union (2-0), Umatilla (2-0), either Burns (1-1) or Nyssa (1-1).

Huntington (0-6) 32.167 (9th)
Prospect (0-6) 32.167 (9th)
Cascade Locks (0-3) 31.333 (Ind)

Based on current league standings (these are still kinda crazy, I know) and the system of using 2 teams per league and 4 wild-cards for a 16-team playoff, the playoff teams would be, with their league records in parentheses:

D1: Perrydale (4-0), St. Paul (3-1) or Falls City (3-1) D2: Butte Falls (5-0), Triad (5-1) D3: Dufur (3-0), SWC (3-0), D4: Imbler (3-0), Joseph (2-1) or Wallowa (2-1) D5: Lowell (4-0), Mohawk (3-1) or Siletz Valley (3-1), D6: Crane (5-0) and Adrian (4-0).

The wildcards are such a mess right now. My best guess is Camas Valley, either Jordan Valley or Adrian, Triangle Lake and Gilchrist. It will be clearer next week, I think.

4A, 10/14

I made an attempt at a top 16 here, based on 4 criteria and the teams receiving votes in the AP poll. 1 & 2 are the Colley and RPI ratings from www.oregonprepsports.net, which is nice enough to link to this blog. 3 is my own point system explained in other parts of this place, which strongly takes into account strength of schedule, and 4 is the latest AP poll.

Team - Colley rank - RPI - My rating - Poll - Total
1. Astoria 2-1-1-3 7

Based on current league standings (and the standings are starting to make sense) and the system of using 2 teams per league and 6 wild-cards for a 20-team playoff, the playoff teams would be, with their league records in parentheses:

Cowapa: Astoria (2-0), Banks (1-1) Capital: Estacada (3-0), Gladstone (2-0) Far West: North Bend (2-0), Douglas (2-0) Valco: Central (2-0), Philomath (2-0) Sky-Em: Junction City (3-1), Marist (3-0) Skyline: N. Valley (1-0), Hidden Valley (2-0) GOL: Baker (0-0) and Ontario (0-0) (speculation here).

Out this week: South Umpqua, Newport, Cottage Grove

The first round byes would go to the first place teams (Astoria, Gladstone, NB, Central, Marist, HV and Baker) and Banks.

5A, 10/14

I made an attempt at a top 14 here, based on 4 criteria. 1 & 2 are the Colley and RPI ratings from www.oregonprepsports.net, which is nice enough to link to this blog. 3 is my own point system explained in other parts of this place, which strongly takes into account strength of schedule, and 4 is the latest AP poll.

1. Thurston 1-1-1-2 5

13. Wilsonville 13-14-13-14 54
14. Crescent Valley 14-13-14-13 54

I really don't know that WA and Thurston are separable. I would rank them 1 and 1A, personally.

This week's point totals.

Roosevelt (0-6), 30.000 (5th)

Based on current league standings (which are in some cases rather surprising) and the system of using 3 teams per league and 2 wild-cards for a 20-team playoff, the playoff teams would be, with their league records in parentheses:

PIL: Jefferson (2-0), Madison (2-0), Cleveland (0-1) NW Oregon: Hillsboro (3-1), Sherwood (3-0), Century (3-1) Mid-Willamette: Corvallis (4-0), South Albany (4-0), West Albany (4-0) Midwestern: Churchill (2-0), Springfield or Marshfield (1-1), Thurston (2-0) Southern Sky: Crater (1-1), Klamath Union (1-0), Ashland (1-0) IMC: Hermiston (3-1), Summit (3-0), and Mountain View (3-1).

The two wildcards would be Willamette and Glencoe.
