The first thing I notice is that the OSAA bracket is VERY top-heavy. The #1,2,4,6,7,9,10 and the two teams tied for #11 are ALL on top. Not only that, but #2,4,6,and 7 are in the same QUARTER. Two of those teams won't even make it to the quarterfinals. The second-lowest ranked league #1 team has a bye, and the two highest-ranked teams in the bottom half will meet in the quarterfinals. Seems very unbalanced to me.

In my bracket, #2,4,6,7,9 and 10 are still on top, but #1 is no longer there. I'm a little unhappy about #4 playing #7 in the second round, but such is the way of the Pacific league. So, if the pollsters know their stuff, #2 will play #6 and #4 will play #10 in the quarterfinals. In the bottom half are #1,3,5,8,both 11s,12 and 14. The only part of my bracket I'm unhappy with is the second-round matchup between the #3 and #5 teams. My quarters would #3/5 vs #13, and #1 vs #8. Again, the bottom half of this bracket is a little imbalanced, but not horribly.

I’ll start by placing the 6 league leaders in the first 6 spots in the bracket. They will go in point order into pools ABCDDC.

Now to put in the 6 league 2nd-place teams opposite the league champions. Since Pools A and D will be on the top half-bracket, and pools B and C on the bottom half-bracket, I’ll separate based on that. Each team will be placed in the first spot they can possibly be placed in pools BAABCD.

Based on current league standings (these are still kinda crazy, I know) and the system of using 2 teams per league and 4 wild-cards for a 16-team playoff, the playoff teams would be, with their league records in parentheses:

I'll start by placing the 6 league leaders in the first 6 spots in the bracket. They will go in point order into pools ABCDDC.

Pool C: Butte Falls, Imbler
Pool D: Perrydale, Crane

Now to put in the 6 league 2nd-place teams opposite the league champions. Since Pools A and D will be on the top half-bracket, and pools B and C on the bottom half-bracket, I’ll separate based on that. Each team will be placed in the first spot they can possibly be placed in pools BAABCD

Pool A: Dufur, Joseph, Siletz Valley
Pool B: Lowell, St. Paul, Jordan Valley
Pool C: Butte Falls, Imbler, Echo
Pool D: Perrydale, Crane, Triad

I'll start by placing the 7 league leaders in the first 7 spots in the bracket. They will go in point order ABCDDCB

Changing things up a bit here. Only taking 2 teams from the two 5-team conferences and 3 teams from the other 4. This will add two wild cards to the mix. Based on current league standings and the system of using 3 teams for 4 leagues, 2 teams for 2 leagues and 4 wild-cards for a 20-team playoff, the playoff teams would be, with their league records in parentheses:

The four wildcards would be Willamette, Marshfield, Crater and Pendleton. Glencoe is not considered because they are not in 4th place in their league. Willamette is, because the 4th place team in that league is a wildcard as well.

The byes would go to all the first place teams AND second place teams. I have been a doofus about this. It’s a 20-team bracket, 12 of them get first round byes. In my system, the third-place and wild-card teams should be playing each other, with the third place teams being at home.

In this week: Marshfield.
Out this week: Cleveland.

This one is a 16-team playoff with 5 leagues, so I'll do the same thing I did with the 3A division.

If there were one wildcard team, the automatic qualifiers would be Portland Christian, Knappa, Nestucca, Central Linn, Oakridge, North Douglas, Culver, Blanchet, Santiam, Bonanza, Lakeview, Lost River, Pilot Rock, Heppner, and either Enterprise or Union. The wildcard would be Scio.

With 6 wildcards, the first two from each league are in, and the wildcards would be Nestucca, Santiam, Lost River, Scio, Enterprise and Union. So only one change at this point.

This is a 16-team playoff, and there are 5 leagues. I'll look at 2 different scenarios here: Top 3 per league with one wildcard, and top 2 per league with 6 wildcards.

If there was one wildcard, the current automatics would be: Rainier, Clatskanie, Neah-Kah-Nie, Amity, Sheridan, Colton, Regis, Santiam Christian, Toledo, Gold Beach, Myrtle Point, Reedsport, Grant Union, Umatilla and Vale. The wildcard would be Glide.

If there were six wildcards, the automatics would be the first 2 from each league. The wildcards would be Reedsport, Colton, Glide, Vale, Nyssa and either Bandon, Burns or Toledo.

Basically a difference of one team. Nyssa instead of NKN.

In a 20-team bracket, there are 4 byes for District champs. At this point in the season by the ratings, they would go to West Albany, Willamette, Century and Mountain View. Assuming each league gets three teams in, and 2 wildcards, the playoff teams would be: Cleveland, Jefferson, Marshall, Sherwood, Hillsboro, Silverton, S. Albany, Thurston, Churchill, Ashland, Mazama, Crater, Pendleton and Hermiston. The wildcards would be Klamath Union and either Glencoe or Springfield.

How My Ratings Work.

Ratings for Oregon football, 2008.

The ratings are done in the following manner: Each team is assigned to a rank determined by their current won-loss record. A team that has won 2/3 or more of their games is classified rank 1, a team that has won less than 1/3 of their games is rank 3, and the teams in between are rank 2. At this point in the season, 2-1 or better is rank 1, and anyone 1-3 or worse is rank 3.

A win over a rank 1 team is worth 50 points, a win over a rank 2 team is worth 45 points, and a win over a rank 3 team is worth 40 points. A loss to a rank 1 team is worth 38 points, a loss to a rank 2 team is worth 33 points, and a loss to a rank 3 team is worth 28 points.

Any team that plays a team in a classification one level above them gets 2 bonus points. Playing 2 levels or more up is worth 5 bonus points. There is no penalty for playing a team in a classification lower than yours. Point spread means absolutely nothing in this system. Win by 93, win by 1, it's the same.

This system is intended to do two things: Seed a potential playoff structure and determine wild-card teams for said playoffs. As playoff time approaches, I will offer up alternative scenarios to what the OSAA has provided, more as a topic for discussion than any kind of suggestion that this is what the OSAA ACTUALLY should do.

This system is similar to one used in Nebraska for all its sports.
